Who
We are and
what we do
Kim and Emma work to blend there experience and complimentary tastes to cultivate a stylish atmosphere and exceptional end result.
The Place
Founded in 1991 by style doyenne, Kim Sherwood-Caso, Changes was conceived to be much more than just a hair salon. Changes was to be a nexus for culture. The Commons meets the country. Old Time meets the avant garde. Ithaca localism meets New York City inspired cosmopolitan. Townies meet visiting luminaries. Punk Rock meets classy couture. Democrat meets Republican. Well, let's not go too far. But you get the picture.
Changes was established in the then-edgy, now-trendy Ithaca Downtown. Kim wanted to locate her business in an area that was accessible to folks from the East and South Hill and Fall Creekers alike. Born and raised out in Brooktondale, yet then living in the heart of Ithaca, Kim realized that a hair salon would bring together folks of all stripes as much as The Johnny Dowd Band did in bars and clubs around town. Changes began in a cozy space on State Street off the Commons and quickly began busting at the seams. An art gallery cum hair salon, Changes flourished for many years under the ownership of Lenny Randall. Just before he passed away, he passed the establishment on to Kim-and she has kept it in good hands ever since.
Today, Changes is a fixture on the Commons attracting a diverse clientele. It is a hip salon committed to quality service and a friendly atmosphere. At Changes all clients receive a stress relieving shampoo and scalp treatment with their service. Aveda products are available in the reception area. Change's intimate and friendly atmosphere makes everyone feel at ease. "My goal for Changes is to be a place where people convene for a good coiffe and good conversation."

Kim Sherwood
An Ithaca native, Kim has been cutting hair for more than fifteen years. Combined with her practical salon experience and knowledge of Aveda products, methods and philosophy, Kim is one of the most sought-after hair professionals in the region. While apprenticing under Lenny Randall (the previous owner of Changes), Kim mastered both the cutting-edge techniques and the classic styles.
A master of hair, Kim's clients regularly travel from as far as New York, Boston, The Netherlands or Trumansburg to get coiffed. She is proud of her incredible attention to detail and her ability to figure out a client's needs even if they find it difficult to put their desired style into words.
Kim specializes in nervous, detail-oriented, meticulous clients and her favorite client is the true Ithacan, like herself. She enjoys the world of hair color as much as haircutting and her coloring skills range from the ability to produce a dramatic edgy punk look to simply enhancing a clients natural color with a barely seen fine highlight. She has also styled the hair of Ithaca luminaries.
Emma Morris
Emma Morris, a Trumansburg native, has followed a long-time interest in creative design and hair cutting. She trained at the Aveda Institute in New York City in 2006, where she learned the latest cutting and coloring techniques as well as the classic styles that remain popular today. This avenue has proved fitting for Emma. Their aim for modern, intricate styles is exemplified with each of Emma's clients.

Meredith Towsand
Voted the most artistic in her class upon high school graduation and earning a cosmetology licence at age 18, Meredith Towsand has gained over ten years experience in art and hairstyling.
In 2008, Meredith moved to Ithaca, NY to further her career as a visual artist and hair stylist. Since the move, she has exhibited her artwork in over a dozen shows and has gained a reputation for her creative hair styles.
Meredith specializes in artistic, creative, colorful and modern hairstyles and color. She also loves creating updos for formal events, weddings and photo shoots.
Philosophy
Changes is known not only for its skilled seasoned stylists but also for its superior customer service and satisfaction guarantee. Kim feels that the most important aspect of a hair service is the consultation. A one-on-one discussion of ideas, past experiences, and expectations is an integral part of the Changes services. Another important feature of the Changes experience is that clients are taught how to recreate their look at home. Appropriate techniques, product, and application are explained with every service provided at Changes. The hair service itself is executed by an impassioned, well-experienced, highly trained professional who is always thirsty for the latest techniques and trends.
Beyond hair Kim, and thus Changes, are serious patrons of the arts and are dedicated to encourage patronage in others. That's why at Changes you will see rotating paintings, photographs and other pieces of art that Kim has allowed to be displayed by local artists for sale or to just be admired and discussed.
Indeed, Kim champions the art of conversation. Nothing excites Kim or Emma more than an impassioned debate on art, politics, food, men, woman, children, pets, etc. Nothing is off limits. If it affects on person it's good enough for discussion.
The Aveda Way
Aveda, sold exclusively at Changes, is equally committed to the individual's natural beauty and that of the planet. This mission of sustainability and cosmetology is right at home in Ithaca and at Changes. "We use Aveda products because we believe in their philosophy," Kim comments. "They are committed to being 'Green' while remaining abreast of the cutting edge trends in fashion."
Founded in 1978 by Horst Rechelbacher, Aveda was one of the first beauty companies to endorse a set of environmental principles designed to encourage greater environmental responsibility in business known as The Ceres Principles. These principles (www.ceres.org) addressed sustainability challenges such as global climate change.
In addition to Aveda's fashion commitments, the company has pledged itself to take responsibility for its environmental impact. Aveda's Soil to Bottle traceability system allows the corporation to follow and document the precise origin of their essential oils. It has partnered with farmers in South America to draw from the earth's natural resources while spotlighting areas in need of international media and business attention.
