Changes was established downtown in the mid-80’s, was run out of a storefront on East State street until 1997, and currently occupies a second-floor loft on Aurora street, on the the east end of the Ithaca Commons.

Run originally by Lenny Randall, the business has been in the hands of Kim Sherwood Caso since 1991, during which time Changes has become a fixture of Ithaca’s business community.

Changes was conceived as a place to celebrate and support local music and art. The environment Kim and her staff have created is laid-back and funky, yet professional. Your ideas about looks and aesthetics are welcomed and appreciated, and time is taken to make sure you get the haircut you came for. With forty-five minute, to one-hour appointments, and colors lasting one to two hours, this is a place to relax and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows, rotating exhibits on the walls, music, and conversation.

Changes attracts to its intimate space a diverse clientele, from high school students to Cornell and Ithaca College faculty, local farmworkers and musicians as well as elected officials and technology and business people. At Changes, you get more than a ready-made, cookie-cutter style. You get the chance to have a personal exchange with your hairdresser.

Kim Sherwood Caso

Owner / Stylist

Kim Sherwood Caso has been cutting and styling hair for over twenty-five years. An Ithaca native, Kim began her training with Changes’ previous owner, Lenny Randall, who used Kim to hold his clients’ hair while he cut. Kenny continued to mentor Kim until 1990 when he transferred ownership of Changes to her. Kim continues her professional development with Aveda Current Trends classes in Geneva and New York City.

Lenny was a big supporter of local artists and Kim continues this tradition by displaying local artwork, and playing local music, at Changes. As a singer herself, who has toured with local favorite Johnny Dowd, and with two boys that are active in Ithaca’s local music scene, Kim has a great appreciation for all things artistic.

With Changes, Kim has created a relaxed environment that is focused on cuts and color and overall healthy hair. Her clientele range from Cornell PhD students and IC theater students, to long-time locals, but her doors are open to all. Kim is always happy to share her knowledge of Ithaca’s “nooks and crannies” with those that are new in town.

When she isn’t in the salon, you’ll find Kim tending her garden, hiking, kayaking, or out at local music shows around town.

Biz Kornblum

Biz Kornblum, also a native Ithaca, grew up “hair fixated” as a kid, always trying to make her hair bigger, fuller or longer. As a teen, she began experimenting with her own hair product creations and, when she entered college, she became the local go-to stylist among her friends. After feeling burnt out and disconnected from four years of Comparative Literature at Smith College, Biz realized that she needed to be working with her hands and connecting with people – not stuck in a room with books. In 2016, Kim hired Biz as a stylist, and Biz has found Changes the perfect environment to grow her career.

Biz understands that each individual has an idea of how they want to look. Her goal is to help her client’s vision come to life. She especially values hair health – preferring to use natural ingredients over bleaching and wild colors – and aims to bring out the natural beauty of her clients’ hair.

Biz also has a second life as part-owner of the Biz and Benny Juice Company, which she started when she was twelve, and which still sells fresh juices and smoothies at Ithaca’s Farmer’s Market (she was, in fact, the youngest DBA holder in Tompkins County). When she isn’t cutting hair or juicing fruits and vegetables, you’ll probably find her spending time with her family, reading, playing video games, or obsessing over her dog.
